Congress & PROs Intro Songwriter Equity Act

Exciting legislation is afoot for songwriters whose work ranges beyond commercial horizons. Congressman Doug Collins (R-GA) introduced a bill this week to help bring songwriters' mechanical and public performance royalty rates into the 21st Century.

Known as the Songwriter Equity Act, the legislation has excellent timing within the current copyright-review whirlwind going on in the Capitol right now. According to NMPA President and CEO David Israelite, the intent is for mechanical and public performance royalties to resemble the 50/50 splits now enjoyed with sync licenses for TV and film."The Songwriter Equity Act represents an important step to inject fairness into a process that is undeniably stacked against songwriters and publishers, and I applaud Congressman Collins for his leadership on the issue," said Isrealite at a press conference on Feb. 25th.
